However, a watch movement cannot truly capture the feel, energy and power of a high performance car engine. That is, so far – the Jacob & Co. Bugatti Chiron Tourbillon.
It started with an idea that Jacob & Co. conceived with Bugatti – how to recreate the visceral feel of the iconic Bugatti 16-cylinder engine in a wristwatch.
After nearly a year of development, the Bugatti Chiron Tourbillon has the answer. Everything about the watch is designed to pay homage to the Chiron. Here’s where it gets interesting: Press the right-hand crown of the watch and the engine starts—the crankshaft turns and the pistons pump up and down, just like a real internal combustion engine. Two “turbochargers” on the side of the engine block (four in the actual Chiron engine) spin while the engine is running, adding to the visual impact.
Incredibly beautiful to look at and extremely complex to realize (the movement is made up of 578 parts), the Bugatti Chiron Tourbillon has done something that had never been attempted before – seamlessly combining engine and watch.

First off, the incredible flying tourbillon movement is a completely clean design. Jacob & Co. worked with its movement suppliers for over a year to realize this spectacular creation.
The top and sides of the watch feature sapphire crystal glass, allowing every facet of the watch to be clearly seen. The big draw, of course, is the engine block animation. The crankshaft that drives the mechanism is one of the smallest and most complex watch parts ever manufactured, made from a single solid piece of steel. The pistons themselves are difficult to manufacture, and they are mounted on the crankshaft at different angles for maximum display.
The movement is fully suspended in four places and looks like actual car shock absorbers from the Chiron. In fact, the movement floats inside the case – you can watch it move up and down inside. Animation aside, the overall theme is “less is more”. Aside from the flying tourbillon bearing the Jacob & Co. logo, the only other branding on the front of the watch is a subtle EB logo on the engine compartment, with 16 pistons on the crankshaft, ready to go.
The entire watch is designed to showcase the spectacular movement, face forward so you can show your friends the 30° inclined tourbillon and animation. The window of the tourbillon is modeled after the iconic horseshoe grille of the Bugatti super sports car.
The crown of the watch is located at the bottom of the case – the left crown sets the time, the middle crown houses the movement (60 hour power reserve) and animation winding, pressing the right crown starts the animation.
The suspension of the movement posed an additional challenge to the movement designers, as they had to create (and patent) a special automotive-style lateral system so that the crown post would not be damaged by movement up and down within the case.
The power reserve of the animation and the power reserve of the chronograph are different, but both are wound by the winding crown, clockwise for the movement, and counterclockwise for the engine animation. The power reserve indicator even features a generic gas pump symbol at three o’clock on the side of the instrument.
