The invention of the perpetual calendar

In addition to the chronograph and minute repeater functions, the perpetual calendar is another complication that makes a watch a masterpiece of fine watchmaking and a true luxury product. In 1764, English watchmaker Thomas March invented the first pocket watch with a perpetual calendar to cope with the complex system of the Gregorian calendar. The months of the Gregorian calendar are 28, 30 and 31 days, with an extra day in February in leap years, which occur every four years. The special mechanical memory of 1461 days provided by the perpetual calendar complication takes all these variables into account and only allows manual adjustment on March 1, 2100, because in exceptional circumstances, that year is not a leap year.

The rule states that if a secular year (e.g. 1700, 1800, 1900, 2100) does not add up to an integer when divided by 400, it is not a leap year. That is why in the year 2100 the calendar will have to be reset manually to February 28.

1925, a landmark year in the history of fake Patek Philippe
In 1925, Patek Philippe broke new ground with the launch of the perpetual calendar reference 97975. It was the world’s first wristwatch equipped with a perpetual calendar. Like almost all great inventions, the perpetual calendar has a fascinating history. In fact, the movement dates back to 1898, when Patek Philippe installed it in a ladies’ pendant watch. That watch was not sold, and a quarter of a century later, the perpetual calendar movement reference 97975 was installed in a yellow gold watch. This watch was housed in a 34.4 mm diameter case (case reference 22 033) with hand-engraving of the lugs and sides, an artistic tradition that continues in some current watches. This treasure trove of watchmaking history is now preserved in the Patek Philippe Museum. In 1941, the first watch produced in small series was launched, the extremely rare 1518 perpetual calendar chronograph, which also combined these two complications for the first time.

Ref. 5320 Reinterpreted
As an ode to visual balance and legibility, the perpetual calendar watch, reference 5320, was designed in 2017 with a white gold case and a creamy lacquered dial. In 2022, this vintage style is reinterpreted in a new white gold version with a gilded opaline rose gold dial. The beauty of this watch lies in its balanced case, with a classic diameter of 40 mm and a thickness of 11.13 mm, and its elegant salmon pink dial.

The military inspiration remains, with Arabic numerals and luminous hands, creating a sophisticated contrast with the dial, which is plated with smooth opaline rose gold, a rare finish that gives it a soft color.

The calendar is presented in the typical manner of Patek Philippe’s perpetual calendar watches since 1941, with a double window at 12 o’clock for the day/month line and a hand indicating the date around the moon-phase window at 6 o’clock. Two circular apertures complement each other: one between 7 and 8 o’clock for day and night, and the other between 4 and 5 o’clock for the leap-year cycle – both can be used to adjust the calendar. The extremely precise moon phase requires only one day’s correction every 122 years. 324

The SQ movement is driven by a self-winding mechanical movement, all its parts and finishes visible through the sapphire crystal caseback.

Designed for replica watches price enthusiasts and collectors, this refined perpetual calendar has a more relaxed, modern elegance that is perfect for any occasion.
